Carton artwork lives on a flat dieline that gets cut, folded and glued into a box. Preparing artwork for that reality avoids the most common pre-press delays.

Start From the Dieline

If you have a dieline, use the supplier’s version — dielines differ subtly between box makers. If you don’t, provide internal product dimensions and let the supplier build one; design on a guessed dieline and every panel shifts later.

Bleed and Safe Areas

Extend backgrounds 3–5 mm beyond cut lines as bleed. Keep text and logos at least 3 mm inside fold and cut lines — near-fold text distorts when the box is folded and glued.

Panel Orientation

Panels rotate relative to each other on a dieline. Compositions that look right flat can be upside-down on the folded box. Check panel orientations against the fold direction, or ask the supplier for a folding diagram before finalizing.

Color Management

CMYK builds for photographic content; Pantone spot inks where brand color accuracy matters. Approve a printed proof or press sheet for color-critical cartons — screen colors are not contract colors. For solid dark coverage, check ink coverage limits with the printer.

Finishing Interactions

Foil, spot UV and embossing need separate artwork layers positioned exactly. Glue flap areas should stay free of coatings that prevent adhesion. Mention finishing plans early — they affect both file structure and price.
