What to Consider When Ordering Wooden Promotional Gifts
Wood species, engraving limits, natural variation and finishing — the honest constraints of wooden gifts.
Wooden gifts sell on natural character — which also means they behave differently from metal or plastic. Knowing the constraints up front prevents disappointment at delivery.
Wood Species and Cost
Beech and bamboo are workhorses: stable, affordable, laser-friendly. Walnut and cherry are premium with richer tones. MDF suits simple shapes at the lowest cost but lacks natural grain. Species affects price, tone and engraving contrast.
Engraving Has Limits
Laser engraving produces single-color burn contrast. Fine grayscale detail, photographic shading and very thin lines do not reproduce — line art and bold typography engrave best. Full-color UV printing is the alternative when the design needs more than one tone.
Natural Variation Is the Product
Grain, tone and small knots differ piece to piece — this is inherent to wood, not a defect. Define an acceptable variation range in the specification (photos help) so quality checks have a reference. If your brand demands perfect uniformity, wood may be the wrong material.
Finishing Options
Raw wood feels natural but stains; oiled finishes deepen tone and resist moisture; varnish adds gloss and protection. Confirm the finish in writing — it changes both look and feel.
Hardware and Packaging
Keychains and bookmarks need metal hardware matched in tone. For retail or gifting, kraft boxes and card backings pair naturally with wood — and cost less than premium rigid packaging.
