Custom Metal Keychains: Materials, Finishes and Design Options
Formats, materials and hardware choices for a keychain that survives years of pockets and bags.
Keychains are among the longest-lived promotional products — which makes design and material decisions more consequential than for a flyer or sticker.
Main Formats
- Die-cast emblem keychain (2D or 3D relief, zinc alloy)
- Bottle opener keychain (flat, functional)
- Luggage tag with window or name plate
- Enamel design combined with keyring hardware
Materials
Die-cast zinc alloy is the standard: it holds 2D/3D detail well and accepts all platings. Stamped brass and stainless steel suit thinner, flatter designs. Iron is a budget option for simple shapes.
Finishes
Polished plating reads premium; antique finishes hide scratches — a practical advantage for an item that lives with keys. Matte and two-tone finishes give modern looks. Decoration options include soft/hard enamel, printed color and laser engraving.
Hardware Matters
The attachment is what fails first in daily use. Split rings are the most durable; swivel clips are convenient; lobster clasps suit detachable use. Match hardware plating to the body — mismatched tones are a visible quality flaw.
Sizing Guidance
Most emblem keychains run 35–50 mm. Below 30 mm, detail and branding get lost; above 60 mm, the piece feels heavy in a pocket. Bottle openers usually run 55–75 mm to keep leverage usable.
